The Mgarr ix-Xini Valley Regional Park Project, undertaken jointly by the Xewkija and Sannat Local Councils, incorporates a number of mini-projects. One such mini-project is an archaeological survey and study of the cultural features in the area of the same valley. This survey (and study) and the eventual publication of its results are intended to highlight the importance of these features and enhance public awareness and appreciation of the same, thus also ensuring their preservation.
The survey was commenced in the summer season of 2005 with the active participation of Superintendence of Cultural Heritage personnel and archaeology students of the University of Malta. Currently, the features are being individually documented to be followed by a GIS survey of the entire area at a later stage. The results of the survey, incorporating also a study of the same features, will be published.
However, the survey itself involves also the systematic excavation of a relatively small area falling within the limits of the park and whose archaeological potential had long been detected.
This area was therefore subjected to an archaeological excavation also undertaken jointly by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and the Department of Classics and Archaeology of the University of Malta on the initiative of the Mgarr ix-Xini Valley Regional Park Action Committee set up by the Xewkija and Sannat Local Councils with the task of coordinating the project. The excavation was initiated in the summer season of 2005 and a detailed archaeological report will be published following the completion of the excavation.
