Carnival - 2008

The Xewkija Local Council organized Carnival activities for The 2008 Carnival.  On Friday 1st February, at the Xewkija Parish Center, at 6.30 the Carnival Costumes Competitions were organised.  There were six categories for these competitions.  About forty children aged between 2 and thirteen participated for this year's competitions.  At the end of this event Mayor Dr Monica Vella presented all participants with trophies.

The Mellieha Stage Friends presented a comical play 'Il-Giddieb Ghomru Qasir'.  At the end of the play the Mayor Dr Monica Vella and Mr Ninu Cutajar (Director of the Mellieha Stage Friends) exchanged gifts for this occasion.

On Saturday 2nd February, the main Carnival Show was held at St John The Baptist Square.  A defile of Carnival Dance Companies and Carnival Floats commenced from St. Bert Street at 6.00pm.  At the same time at St John The Baptist Square the Carnival Dance Companies started their performances.

On Sunday 3rd February, a Carnival Parade was organized with the participation of Prekursur Band and the Carnival floats.  The parade commenced from Ta’ Gokk Street (Near Gnien Castelvenere) at 10.00am.  Carnival Dance Companies started their performances near the school at Soil Street.  At the end of the parade the traditional cockaigne (Il-Kukkanja) was organized for the second consecutive time by the Xewkija Local Council.
