Door-to-door Collection of household waste - Domestic waste is collected from Monday to Saturday including public holidays. Collection starts at 3.00 p.m. The Council notifies the residents that garbage should not be left out earlier than half an hour before it is collected.  Rubbish is collected door-to-door as usual. No accumulation of garbage bags in the road is permitted.


Bulky Refuse - For the collection of bulky refuse please phone during office hours on 21558822 / 21565719. The Council offers this service free of charge to all our  residents. If you have any query regarding the service do not hesitate to contact us.


Open Skips – The Council offers the service of Open Skips free of charge to all our residents.  The Open Skips services is offered every Saturday from 8.30am to 5.00pm at Widnet il-Bahar Street, near Rosa Magro Primary School, in front of Bring in Sites location.  The residents are asked to cooperate with the Council and do not throw refuse outside the skips.


Internet Cafe’  - The Internet Cafe’ center situated at the Council premises is open to the public from Monday to Friday, office hours.  The Internet Cafe’ center situated at the Xewkija Public Library, is open from 11.00am to 1.00pm from Monday to Friday excluding Wednesday, from 5.00pm to 8.00pm every Tuesday and from 8.00am to 12.00pm every Saturday. Internet center is closed on Public Holidays. The access is free of charge and a printer is available.


Street Sweeping - The Council provides the service for the cleaning of urban roads. Please do not leave accumulated dust/waste. If you spot a street that needs sweeping do not hesitate to give us a call.


Dog litter - It is illegal to leave dog litter on public property. Persons leaving their pet litter on public property will be fined as per relevant Legal Notice. The Council will be enforcing this law immediately.


Non-Urban Cleaning - Anyone spotting any rubbish dumps in the non urban (public) area of our locality please report to us giving exact details of the site.  If you have any bulky rubbish please use the bulky refuse service, DO NOT dump in the countryside.


Maintenance of Traffic Signs and Road Markings - The Council maintains traffic signs and road markings in good condition for the safety in our roads.


Road and Pavement Maintenance – The pot holes in roads are patched by cold asphalt on regular basis.  Every year the council resurface by hot asphalt a number roads depending on financial situation of the council.  The Council maintain the pavements and where possible reconstruct new pavements.


Maintenance of Parks, Gardens and Public Spaces - Parks, Gardens and other public spaces in the locality are maintained by the Council. Please help us keep our locality in a good condition. If you have any information/details about vandals/vandalism please report immediately to the Local Council or police.


Street Lightening - Street Lightening were devolved to the Local Councils.  Therefore the maintenance of the street lamps is the Council's responsibility.  When a lamp is burnt, residents are urged to contact the Local Council and give the number of the lamp.



Public Conveniences - In our locality we have public conveniences located in St. John The Baptist Square and at Gnien il-Haddiem, Vjal il-Labour.



Public Library - The library situated at Rosa Magro Primary School, Soil Street, Xewkija.



Services for the Elderly - Kartanzjan: Persons loosing their Kartanzjan can call at the Council's office during office hours. We will apply for a new one.



Day Care Center for the Elderly – The Council offers the services of Day Care Center for the elderly.  The Day Care Center which is situated at Mgarr Road Ghajnsielem, is run together with the Central Government and the Church.  Transport is provided free of charge every Tuesday.



Permits from Local Council - Regulations of 2002 regarding Activities requiring a Local Council's permit:

  • Placing of skip in public property

  • Placing of kiddie ride machines in public property

  • Deposit of building material in public property

  • Deposit and use of crane and machinery

  • Placing of tables and chairs in public property for catering services

  • Placing of kiosk

  • Occasional Entertainment

A fee may be charged according to the Regulations. The Council may deem necessary to commission a Local Warden for the duration of works.


Trenching Works - All trenching works require a permit from the Local Council and other entities accordingly.


Trading Licences - Payments for Trading Licences are being accepted at the Council's Office. Please present exact amount as on invoice. An automated receipt is given for each payment.


Rents on Government property - Payment on presentation of invoice from the Lands Department can be made at the Council's office. Please present exact amount as on invoice. An automated receipt is given for each payment.


Payment of Police and Local Warden's Contraventions - Payments can be made at the Council's Office.  No payments can be accepted less than 3 working days from date of tribunal sitting. An automated receipt is given for each payment.


Publication -  Xewkija, The First Village of Gozo, by Rev. Dr Joseph Bezzina. The book full of colour photos and information on the history of Xewkija can be purchased from the local Council's office for the fee of €5.25.
